This is a really important step when it comes to healing in any way, and that’s acknowledging your emotions. Women tend to be better at this than men which is why they tend to heal faster after breakups. Men are more likely to distract themselves or push their feelings down, but it only prolongs the pain and will always come out later. So allow yourself to cry, wallow and grieve for what has been lost, there’s no denying it’s a sad time and that needs to be acknowledged before you can move on from it. Speak to friends, journal, work through your feelings. Find ways to relax that don’t involve damaging your body such as alcohol or eating too much. Even if it’s only a stop gap, it’s a comfortable little haven that’s just yours and you can use to recover and grow. A home you once shared with a partner will be full of memories and being surrounded by these can make it difficult to properly heal and move on. Whether it’s a small house, a tiny apartment or even a room in a shared home, getting that distance and having your own space is a great way to gain perspective and is one of the best things you can do after breaking up.
Travel
Travel, especially solo travel can be so rewarding and can be a great way to prove to yourself that you’re capable and independent- as well as have fun after you’ve been through a breakup. If you have the time and funds available to you, then travel can really help you throughout the healing process. You won’t be tempted to stay in bed and hide away from the world when you’re in a new, exciting location! Book a trip to somewhere you’ve always wanted to go, rope in some friends to come with you but if you can’t get a travel crew together then just go alone. When you’re in a partnership for so long it is easy to lose some of your independence and when you’re always used to having someone with you, this time alone can be really refreshing and remind you that you can achieve anything. Whether it’s a weekend city break, two weeks in the sunshine or a month backpacking, travel can be just what you need to get back on the right foot after having a breakup, and can help you achieve a clean split too where you’re not on your phone or tempted to call them.
Change your appearance
Changing your appearance after a breakup is certainly nothing new, in fact it’s a stereotypical thing to do once you’ve split up from someone! But there’s a reason for this- and changing your appearance is something well worth doing. Maybe your partner was jealous, controlling or didn’t like you to look a certain way- now is the perfect time to start looking the way you want! A new look also signifies a new change, and if a badass outfit and a new haircut is what it takes to get back out into the world and move on then go for it! Visit a hairdresser and ask them to bring your vision to life, experiment with some new makeup and clothing styles. This can signify the new version of ‘you’ that’s emerging and can be a positive step on your journey to complete healing.
Try new things
Trying new things is something that all of us should be doing, but when you’re in a relationship it’s easy to get lazy. When you have the comfort of another person close by, it’s tempting to spend evenings and weekends lounged on the sofa, rather than getting out there and challenging your body and mind. When you’re on your own again, you can find the motivation to do new things is much increased, so take advantage of this! Set some goals then go out and smash them, put yourself out there and try new things, with no one to answer to and no one to hold you back this can be a fantastic time to put yourself first and figure out what you enjoy. Whether it’s joining a cooking class or climbing a mountain or anything in between, try new things to keep yourself busy and give your life a new sense of purpose.
