It’s that time of year again, and it’s already hit us pretty hard…yep, I’m talking about cold & flu season! My youngest has had asthma since he was 1 so when he gets a cold it goes straight to his chest. Theirs a lot of runny noses & coughing. Along with his inhaler, I give him medications to help alleviate the other symptoms like flem & that nasty runny nose. I’m going to share my tips on prepping for and helping my kids tackle the cold & flu season.
When he started showing signs of a cold, I immediately grabbed the Robitussin from the medicine cabinet. There is a few med I like to keep on hand j.i.c.
Children’s Robitussin ® DM Day/Night Pack – Formulated just for kids, Children’s Robitussin® DM Day/Night Pack – non-drowsy daytime formula helps break up chest congestion, while the long-acting nighttime formula relieves coughs and runny noses to help kids get the rest they need.
Children’s Dimetapp® Cold & Cough
Children’s Advil® Suspension
Each one gets plenty of use in our house this time of year. My 8-year-old seems to always get sick first…but it’s very rare for him to get a fever…now watch, now that I said something…okay knock on wood!
Yes, the trusted lovie. Every child has one or two stuffed animals or blankies that they are attached to. You could always buy them a new one to lift spitits or buy one that just comes around (like elf on a shelf kinda thing) when they are sick to make sure that they feel better.
Their little bodies need to be able to fight off any cold or flu viruses. Having them get plenty of rest is important. Whether it’s on the couch or in bed, make sure they are resting and have plenty of fluid to drink within arms reach. When my kids are running a fever I try to make them stay covered…sometimes it’s a battle so some warm clothes and socks become my compromise. It really helps if their lovie is a blanket in this situation.
A cool-mist humidifier goes a long way in relieving dry, stuffed up nasal passages by adding moisture to a room. We have this cool R2-D2 one that my little guy gets so excited to see when he is sick. I’ve also gone to using an oil diffuser for oils that help with various symptoms depending on what they are in need of.
Eucalyptus
Tea Tree
Lemongrass
Lavender
Peppermint
These are my go-to oils for colds, each working alongside your child’s medications to helping your them feel better faster. The added bonus is everyone who can smell them will benefit from their properties.
